The Alexandria National Museum
Housed in a beautiful Italianate mansion, the museum displays some amazing archeologigal finds.
Some of the museum's highlights:
Artefacts from Herakleion, a diorite Sphinx, statues of Isis, Sekhmet and Osiris and a granite stele of Nectanebo II.
From ancient Alexandria come an effigy of Emperor Caracalla in pharaonic gear, a mosaic of Medusa and a statue of the head of Ptolemy II's wife.
Splendid mother-of-pearl inlaid doors and mashrabiyas, Coptic stelae, friezes and priestly garments and a collection of Islamic artefacts from the Fatimid, Mamluke and Ottoman times.
The museum also has an impressive art and history bookshop.
