Muhammad Ali Mosque

Except during the Friday's prayer time, non-Moslims are welcome to visit MohameAliInteriorSmllthe colossal Mosque of Pasha Muhammad Ali, situated within the enclosure of the Citadel. The mosque's imposing size, spectacular setting on a high mountain and ease of access makes it a popular site to visit. Its most impressive feature is the inner prayer hall with a fantastic arrangement of domes and semi-domes. The mosque is built in an Ottoman Baroque style.

Outside of the mosque, in the outer court, stands an ornate clock tower that was given to Muhammad Ali by the French in belated exchange for the obelisk they had removed from the Luxor Temple. From the outer court, the view over Medieval Islamic Cairo with many minarets is astonishing.
